Meet the members - Tom

We know that it can be a little intimidating contacting a society out of blue if you don’t know anybody at all. But don’t let that put you off getting in touch with us! We are a friendly group, love meeting new people and will make you feel very welcome from the moment that you arrive. Our members come from all walks of life and span the generations so there is no need to worry about not fitting in or being out of place. This month, we'd like to introduce the lovely Tom to you all.

I'm Tom and I'm a part of Tyldesley’s pike block, which is the fastest and most accessible way to get on the field and start having fun. It takes less than an hour to give you all the information and training you'll need to take part in a battle safely and responsibly. You'll find yourself armed and armoured, wreathed in cannon and musket smoke, transported through the ages and ready to fight for the King.

If you have even the slightest interest in warfare or history, through books, films or games, I feel there's no finer experience than re-enactment to give you a taste of how it feels to be involved from the inside. I come away from weekends with the kind of interesting bruises that it's hard not to be proud of. Fighting pike is a team activity that I can get behind more than any sport; it's an excellent work-out for the whole body and great stress relief too.

Sir Thomas Tyldesley’s is made up of so many different people from many walks of life, finding common ground in one unique and engaging hobby. It's hard to imagine another setting in which artists, writers, civil servants, historians, couch potatoes, bar staff and cross-country enthusiasts find themselves side by side and working together surrounded by history in action. It's excellently inclusive, a little bit mad and a fine excuse to share a drink or two round a campfire when the evening comes around!
